Winter Safety for Older People in East Riding
As the temperature drops and the days get shorter, winter can bring challenges for many older adults from rising energy costs to slippery pavements and cold homes. Understanding winter safety for older people in East Riding is crucial during these times. At Caremark Hull and East Riding, we’re dedicated to helping older people stay safe, warm and independent through the colder months.
Whether you’re caring for a loved one or managing on your own, these simple steps and local resources can make a big difference.
1. Keep warm and comfortable at home
Cold weather can increase the risk of illnesses such as flu, pneumonia and heart problems. Keeping your home warm and well-insulated is one of the best ways to protect your health.
Top winter warmth tips:
- Keep your main living room heated to at least 18°C
- Close curtains and doors to retain heat.
- Dress in several light layers to trap warmth effectively.
- Ensure your boiler and heating system are serviced before winter.
If you’re finding it hard to afford heating, there is financial help available (see below).

2. Financial support with heating and rising energy bills
Many older people in the East Riding are entitled to winter fuel payments or discounts that can help with heating costs. Make sure you’re claiming everything you qualify for:
Winter Fuel Payment
If you were born before 22 September 1959, you could receive £100-£300 to help with your heating bills. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a letter in October or November saying how much you’ll get. Most eligible people will be paid in November or December 2025.
You can find more information on the GOV website.
Cold Weather Payment
If the temperature in your area drops below freezing for seven consecutive days, you may receive £25 per week. You may be entitled to Cold Weather Payment if you are getting:
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
If you’re eligible you will receive payments automatically.

3. Looking after your health during winter
Cold weather can affect your health, especially if you have long-term conditions. Take steps to protect yourself:
- Get vaccinated – Flu and COVID-19 jabs are free for over-65s.You can book your flu vaccine online at your nearest pharmacy.
- Eat regular, hot meals – They help maintain energy and body temperature.
- Stay hydrated – It’s easy to forget to drink enough water in winter.
- Order prescriptions early – Avoid running out if bad weather prevents travel.
- Seek help promptly – Don’t hesitate to call your GP or NHS 111 if you feel unwell.
4. Stay connected and supported
Winter can feel isolating, especially if you live alone or find it harder to get out. Staying connected is vital for both your mental and physical wellbeing and Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire (HEY) offers fantastic local support to help older people stay active, social and well this winter.
