Pulmonary fibrosis disease – the facts

Pulmonary fibrosis is a devastating disease that leads to breathlessness, disability, and significantly reduced life expectancy. It is a serious and progressive lung disease that results from scar tissue building up in the lungs. With currently approximately 70,000 people in the UK living with pulmonary fibrosis, Caremark Cheltenham and Gloucester thought we should write an article about this debilitating disease.
The thick, stiff tissue created by pulmonary fibrosis makes it increasingly difficult for the lungs to function properly and for oxygen to pass into the bloodstream. There is currently no cure, but treatments and management can help hinder symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
Symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis disease
Symptoms tend to gradually worsen and develop over time. They can be mistaken for other lung conditions, such as COPD, and include:
- Clubbing, a widening and rounding of the fingertips or toes.
- Shortness of breath, especially during or after exercise.
- A persistent, dry cough.
- Weakness and tiredness.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Aching muscles and joints.
Causes
In many cases, the cause of pulmonary fibrosis disease is unknown, which is referred to as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, some cases can be linked to:
- Environmental and occupational exposures – for example, exposure to asbestos, dust, and mould can damage the lungs.
- Autoimmune diseases – for example, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma.
- Medications and treatments – for example, some heart medications and chemotherapy, and chest radiation.
- Genetics.
- Smoking.

Treatment and management of pulmonary fibrosis
As stated above there is no cure for pulmonary fibrosis disease. However, treatment can help improve quality of life and slow down its progression.
Medications:
- Antifibrotic drugs
- Anti-acid medications
Supportive care:
- Lung transplant: For a small number of suitable patients with advanced disease, a lung transplant can be an option.
- Lifestyle changes: Stopping smoking, keeping physically active, and eating a healthy diet are crucial for managing the condition.
