Celebrating Africa Day at Caremark Elmbridge

Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union on this day, 25 May, in 1963. Formally known as African freedom day and then African Liberation day, its origin lies in the collective African resistance to colonialism and economic exploitation. The day was, and is, intended to highlight Africa’s continued collective struggle against adversity.  Theme of Africa Day 2024 is “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa”.

There are 54 countries in the African Continent and we have colleagues from 8 countries as part of our team. When asked for interesting fact for each of their country, they had to say this-

South Africa– BRAAI/Barbeque is popular in South Africa and national day has been dedicated to it. Heritage day for South Africa is celebrated on September 24th and is nicknamed as Braai Day.

Zimbabwe– Has the largest man made lake called Kariba Dam. All fizzy drinks in Zimbabwe are called “Coke”.

Nigeria– Has the third largest movie industry in the world after Hollywood and Bollywood know as “Nollywood”.

Morocco– The “Liver”, not the “Heart” is considered as the symbol of Love.

Uganda– Has 1,066 bird species recorded and has massive wildlife reserves.

Ghana– Produces the second most cocoa beans in the world.

Tunisia– Some houses are build using fish bones. They honour these majestic creatures by incorporating their bones into their architecture.

Botswana– Holds the biggest population of Elephants in Africa.

Africa is not a country. Its an entire continent filled with amazing people, diverse and unparalled culture, and we here at Caremark Elmbridge are very proud of our team mates to be from African back ground
