Why moving to home care is a great move

After starting his caring career working in a residential nursing home, Gopi Surugu switched to the home care team with Caremark Cheltenham and Tewkesbury to support people to stay in their own homes and here he explains why it was a great move for him.

“I much prefer helping people in their own homes,” he said. “You have time to get to know the customer and address their individual needs rather than the rushed, strict regime of a care home,” he says.

Originally from Hyderabad in India, Gopi travelled to the UK to complete a masters’ degree in business management. After stints in telesales and residential care he joined Caremark over three years ago and has now completed his NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Health Care.

Gopi hopes to continue his career with Caremark

“The training provided is excellent, I have learned key skills including  supporting people with dementia that I have been able to use in the field,” Gopi adds.

“I hope to continue my career with Caremark and hopefully move into management to use my business skills.”  

For now, though, Gopi is happy working in home care support where he says patience is vitally important.

Customer focus is the key to good home care

“The key is to be customers focussed, get to know them and understand their needs,” he said.

It’s not just professional skills that Gopi has brought to the UK, he was brought up in the shadow of the world-famous Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Ground and in his spare time plays as an all-rounder for a local team in Cheltenham.

“I enjoy my job and enjoy living in Cheltenham,” he said. “There is lots of green space and parks to play cricket in.”
