The greatest reward in caring
For Joy Laddie the greatest reward in caring comes with seeing the difference simple acts of kindness can make to the life of a customer. She has been with Caremark Cheltenham and Tewkesbury for two years now and recalls one older lady whose quality of life was enhanced simply by having someone to talk to. In our latest staff profile, you can read more about this and her general approach to care.
“When I first started visiting she was finding it very difficult to get to sleep and was taking anti-depressants and sleeping tablets without success,” said Joy.
“The poor lady had no other visitors and seemed very anxious. I was a night carer so after I’d completed the usual duties, I had some time and I sat there and just listened.”
Having someone to talk and turn to
Joy told how the client “unburdened” herself, going through everything she was worried about.
“We just worked through it one issue at a time,” says Joy.
“She told me the next day that she’d had the best nights sleep for ages,” said Joy. “Now she knows she has someone to turn to she is off the anti-depressants and doesn’t need sleeping tablets.”

Joy was brought up in Zimbabwe and qualified as a teacher but switched to caring after helping an elderly relative who was ill.
“That first brought home to me the huge difference a little caring can make to someone’s life,” she said.
“I saw an advert for carers needed in the UK and decided to make the switch. Caremark Cheltenham and Tewkesbury are a good company to work for and supported me throughout my move.”
The perfect job
Joy’s two sons aged 6 and 11 have settled well in the UK. Flexible working hours allow her family time and days off are spent ferrying them between football and rugby.
“I know management at Caremark will help me with any issue or anything I don’t understand,” said Joy.
“I feel I have the perfect job, I get to meet lots of interesting people and help put a smile on their faces. I am happy and my boys are happy.”
