Care became a turning point in his life

Like many people who work in care, Ross Thomas’s journey began not through long‑term planning. Instead, it began through a turning point in his own life. After facing a series of deeply challenging personal circumstances, he sought stability, purpose and the chance to rebuild.
What he discovered at Caremark Recar and Cleveland has now become more than a job. Moreover, this was validated externally when he was named Learner of the Year 2025 by the company which undertakes our staff training, Vision Training North East.
Ross joined Caremark nearly three years ago. His path into the care sector followed a period of personal hardship. During that period, he balanced caring responsibilities at home with financial pressures and family health challenges.
We suggested he focus on one of our live-in care customers. In doing so, working 72 hours a week, Ross provides essential emotional and practical support for a gentlemen who is autistic and faces significant communication and daily‑living challenges. He has become a steady, compassionate presence in this gentlemen’s life.

Learner of the year award
“Initially it was difficult as we got to know each other, but we have build a bond over the years. Furthermore, he has definitely started opening up more to me,” explains Ross.
“He likes to sleep a lot which isn’t great for his mental health. Because I knew he liked fantasy stories, I suggested we could write his own story. As a result, he said he would devote two hours a day to doing this. For him, this was a big breakthrough.”
In 2025, Ross was named Vision Training’s Learner of the Year, a prestigious award recognising his dedication to professional development. He completed his Level 3 Diploma, a major achievement. Notably, he succeeded on his second attempt, demonstrating perseverance and commitment.
Vision Training praised Ross for consistently attending sessions, engaging positively with his tutor, and meeting all expectations. Also, he never allowed personal difficulties to prevent him from progressing. They described him as an inspiring example of resilience and self‑belief.
Moving into care was the best thing he has done
Ross says he was “shocked but honoured” by the award. He sees it as validation for the effort he has invested in both his learning and his work.
“Getting out of the house to start working for Caremark was the best thing I could have done for myself. At that time, I was not in a great place,” explains Ross.
“I love doing what I do because I have not been very good in my own life through the decisions I have made. Nevertheless, I am making a difference in somebody else’s life and, ultimately, this is making me a better person too.”
