Breaking the vicious circle

A review into the support offered in schools to children with autism and other special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) has found there is an urgent need for reform.

For both families and providers, the SEND review has identified there is significant inconsistency in how needs are met, due to a: “vicious cycle of late intervention, low confidence and inefficient resource allocation.”

This cycle starts in early years and mainstream schools where, despite best endeavours, settings are often ill-equipped to identify and support children and young people. Inconsistent practice makes this worse.

Parents seeking state support found it a complex and frustrating experience with frequent delays and the review concluded funding could be better used and that outcomes for these children are consistently worse than their peers.

The results are contained in a just published Green Paper on SEND provision which parents, carers and anyone else involved in the sector are now being asked to consider and comment on to help shape future Government support.

The Government maintains they are as ambitious for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) as for every other child.
