For many people, having somewhere welcoming to go each week like the Caremark Day Centre can make a significant difference. A friendly conversation, a shared laugh, a favourite song or simply spending time in the company of others can turn an ordinary day into something to look forward to.

That is exactly what we want to create at the Caremark (Aylesbury and Wycombe) Community Day Centre in Aylesbury.

Running every Friday at Southcourt Community Centre, Prebendal Avenue, Aylesbury HP21 8LF, our Day Centre is a friendly and supportive place where people can meet others. Additionally, guests can enjoy a variety of activities and feel part of their local community.

When we first opened our doors, the aim was simple: to create somewhere people could come together, feel valued and enjoy meaningful social interaction. Since then, friendships have developed and conversations flow. As a result, people enjoy their Fridays together.

Who is the Day Centre for?

Our Community Day Centre is designed primarily for older adults, including people living with dementia. It is also for people who may simply benefit from more companionship and opportunities to socialise.

You don’t need to be receiving home care from Caremark to attend. The Day Centre is about opening the door to the wider Aylesbury community. It is also about creating an environment where people can feel comfortable and included.

We know that loneliness and social isolation can affect people in many different circumstances. Someone may live alone, have family who live further away or simply find that they don’t have as many opportunities to get out and meet people as they once did.

The Day Centre provides a regular opportunity to change that.

There are General Friendly Sessions from 10:00am–12:00pm, while the afternoon 1:00pm–3:00pm session brings our Dementia and General Friendly groups together. There is also the option to attend for the full day from 10:00am–3:00pm.

Carers are welcome too. Whether somebody is supported by a Caremark Care Assistant or a family member who cares for them, the accompanying carer can attend free of charge.

There’s always something happening

No two Fridays need to feel exactly the same.

Activities are an important part of the Day Centre, but there is no pressure to perform or compete. The emphasis is on enjoyment, participation and spending time together.

Depending on the session, activities can include:

  • Music and singing, including familiar songs that can encourage conversation and shared memories.
  • Bingo, games and quizzes for some friendly fun and mental stimulation.
  • Arts and crafts, giving people the chance to be creative and make something of their own.
  • Knit and Natter, combining a relaxing activity with conversation and companionship.
  • Gentle exercise to encourage safe movement and participation.
  • Reminiscence activities, providing opportunities to talk about memories, experiences and moments from the past.
  • Plenty of social time, conversation and refreshments throughout the day.

Sometimes the simplest activities create the best moments. Completing a jigsaw, chatting over a cup of tea or laughing together during a quiz can be every bit as valuable as a planned activity.

Tea, coffee, cake and biscuits are provided free of charge throughout the day, so there is always an opportunity to sit down and have a chat.

Friendship Activities and Community in Aylesbury

Friendship, confidence and a sense of belonging

Although activities give the day structure, the real heart of the Day Centre is the people.

We have seen friendships develop naturally as people meet regularly. Familiar faces become people to chat with. In time, conversations turn into shared jokes and Friday becomes something participants can genuinely look forward to.

For somebody who spends a lot of time alone, that regular social contact can be particularly meaningful.

We want everyone attending to feel that this is their community too – somewhere they are welcomed as an individual rather than simply attending a service.

The Day Centre also provides opportunities for people to share their own stories and interests. Everyone arrives with a lifetime of experiences. Moreover, taking the time to listen to those experiences is an important part of creating genuine companionship.

Our aim is for people to leave feeling happier, more connected and with a sense of belonging.

Supporting people living with dementia

People living with dementia are specifically welcomed at our Friday sessions.

We understand how important familiarity, patience, reassurance and meaningful engagement can be. Activities such as music, crafts, games, reminiscence and gentle exercise offer different ways for people to participate according to their interests and abilities.

Our afternoon session, from 1:00pm–3:00pm, brings together people attending our Dementia and General Friendly sessions. This helps to create an inclusive community environment.

Family carers are also welcome to attend alongside the person they support, with no charge for the accompanying carer.

Flexible ways to attend

People can choose the option that works best for them.

Individual sessions from 10:00am–12:00pm or 1:00pm–3:00pm cost £20, while a full day from 10:00am–3:00pm costs £30. Those staying for the full day should bring a packed lunch.

Couples can also benefit from discounted rates: £30 per couple for a morning or afternoon session, or £45 for the full day.

Payment can be made by cash, bank transfer or over the phone, giving families flexibility when arranging attendance.

For people who find that the Day Centre becomes part of their regular routine, there is also a 10% discount when four sessions are booked in advance.

Come and experience a Friday with us
