Virtual Dementia Experience at Caremark Elevates Care Standards

Each year, staff at Caremark North Herts and Stevenage have continuous development training in the Virtual Dementia Experience. This innovative training is designed to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia. Each year, care assistants receive this training to ensure they deliver exceptional, compassionate dementia care in North Herts and Stevenage in the local community.
Immersive Training Enhances Dementia Awareness Among Care Assistants
During the 10-minute Virtual Dementia Experience held on the ‘Dementia Bus’, Care Assistants experienced sensory impairments including limited vision and restricted hand movement, disorienting sounds and conversations. These simulations mirror the confusion and frustration that people with dementia often face daily.
Care Assistants were guided through routine tasks like dressing and eating, which become difficult due to dementia-related sensory changes. This hands-on approach fosters empathy and equips staff with insights essential for providing high-quality home care in North Herts and Stevenage.
Realistic Role-Play Highlights Communication Challenges
Trainer Stewart Holdaway from Training2Care brought the experience to life by playing the role of an impatient and frustrated Carer. Unfortunately, many individuals with dementia encounter communication barriers from family members and caregivers.
This realistic portrayal reinforced the importance of patience and effective communication in delivering superior dementia care services.
Sharon Stevens, Marketing Manager at Caremark North Herts and Stevenage, said “this virtual dementia experience should not only be limited to professional carers, every family member of someone living with the challenges of dementia should have this opportunity. It will help them truly understand the deep frustrations of their loved ones. It would also be a good experience for the wider community, including Police, Fire and Ambulance Services who frequently assist vulnerable individuals.”
Reflective Debrief Underpins Dementia Training
Following the simulation, Caremark North Herts and Stevenage staff participated in a one-hour debrief to discuss their feelings and insights. Many described feelings of frustration and helplessness, gaining a deeper understanding of the emotional struggles faced by those with dementia.
One Care Assistant shared, “I now understand why a resident might feel anxious or frustrated. Everyone needs more empathy and patience with everyone we meet” This renewed perspective strengthens our team’s dedication to compassionate care.
