Caremark North Hertfordshire and Stevenage client attending the Hertfordshire slipper swap 2025 at Hitchin Library

Each year, countless people experience slips and falls at home due to worn or unsafe slippers. To help reduce this risk, Hertfordshire Libraries host annual Slipper Swaps.
Marketing Manager, Sharon Stevens took one of the people we support, and it turned out to be an informative and fun couple of hours. The staff at Hitchin Library were as always warm and welcoming.

The Occupational Therapist carried out a complete assessment and offered follow up advice. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service took the time to chat with us about the Hertfordshire slipper swap and book a home safety check. This is a must attend event for everyone in North Hertfordshire.

What is a Slipper Swap?

Hertfordshire Slipper Swaps are community events held in Hertfordshire libraries to promote safety at home, including advice on fall prevention strategies. These events contribute greatly to the concept of a Hertfordshire slipper swap, particularly useful to individuals who are at risk of falling at home, they include

  • Individuals affected by vision impairment.
  • People of any age living with disabilities.
  • Anyone experiencing mobility issues.
  • Individuals recovering from stroke, injury, or illness may benefit most from the Hertfordshire slipper swap initiative.

People living along and fall into the above categories are at even higher risk of experiencing falls at home.

Who Can Attend a Slipper Swap?

The event is open to everyone in the community, not just older persons and vulnerable groups. It is a great event to get advice on home safety and how to prevent falls in UK.

What Happens at a Slipper Swap?

Staff measure for the correct fit and provide them with free non-slip slippers, however, the event offers much more than just this slipper swap idea.
Occupational Therapists are present on the day to provide guidance on:

  • Adaptive equipment that may support safety at home
  • Techniques for modifying daily tasks to reduce the risk of falls and improve home safety.
  • Activities that help individuals maintain independence at home.
  • A welcoming space for everyone to be part of the community.

This is an invaluable free service for people living with disabilities, mobility challenges, or health conditions that increase their risk of falls. The annual Hertfordshire slipper swap is a key contributor to this service.

Moreover, staff from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service are also present to discuss home safety and fire prevention, including:

  • Safe use of paraffin-based creams which are a fire hazard. Examples include Epimax cream and Double base gel.
  • Fire alarms and testing.
  • Safe access in and out of the home for mobility-equipment users.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service giving safety advice on Epimax and other paraffin based creams which can be flamable near open fires and are a significant fire risk.

Additional support and information are offered by organisations such as Age UK and Hertfordshire Health Walks. Library staff are also on hand to signpost visitors to further free resources, support services, and helpful information.

Safe Practices for Wearing Slippers at Home

  • Choose anti-slip or non-slip slippers with soles designed to improve grip on carpets, tiles, and bathroom floors.
  • Velcro-fastened slippers are ideal, as they can be securely tightened to stay in place.
  • Always fully fasten the Velcro and ensure the heel is supported—avoid stepping on the back of slippers.
  • Wear slippers indoors only; use proper footwear outdoors.
  • Keep an eye out for upturned rugs or mats, which can easily cause trips.

How to Choose the Right Non-Slip Slippers

  • Check the tread on the bottom just like tyre tread, worn soles reduce grip and increase the risk of falls.
  • Replace slippers as soon as they become worn.
  • Residents can receive free replacement slippers every year at Hertfordshire Libraries Slipper Swap events.

Specialist shops can assist with choosing the right type of non-slip slippers, including slippers for the older persons additionally, Walkwel in Letchworth Garden City and Stevenage provides specialist advice and products for this purpose.
