Making a difference

There comes a moment in every carer’s career where something happens that makes them realise they are up to the job. At that moment, they see that their work makes a difference to people’s lives.

For Charlotte Wells that moment came when she was taken ill herself and needed some time off work.

“I received messages by text and via colleagues that the people I visit had been asking after me, they said that they missed me and when would I be back,” said Charlotte.

“It was lovely, it showed I had built a connection and I felt valued.”

Found her calling in homecare

Charlotte qualified at college as a nursery nurse. That was her intended career path until life took a different turn.

“My parents were in poor health and it came to the point where I needed to help them,” said Charlotte. “My dad was an amputee and when he passed away 11 years ago my mum’s mobility deteriorated badly and I became her full-time carer.”

When Charlotte’s mum died two years ago she found work in a supermarket. However, her experience looking after her parents made her feel the care sector might be her calling. Charlotte posted her details on a recruitment site. Soon, Caremark Mansfield & Ashfield got in touch.

The interview went well and she has been working as a home care assistant for 18 months now with Caremark. She doesn’t have a car, so all customers are within walking distance of home.

“I love the interaction with customers”

“I love the interaction with customers, we have a good chat and a laugh,” said Charlotte.

“For many customers I might be the only person they see all day. It’s important to listen, to let them talk about their lives, how I can help, and build up that trusting relationship.”

Outside of work Charlotte is looking forward to a trip to Blackpool with fiancé Jack for the resort’s annual fireworks and lights display. In addition, she enjoys watching performances of her sister’s amateur dramatics group.

Her advice to anyone thinking of joining the care sector is to “give it a go.”

“I found the experience of caring for my parents stood me in good stead but even if you don’t have that, the Caremark training is good and there is always support on hand,” said Charlotte.
