George* was referred to Caremark after undergoing a leg amputation in hospital. He required support with rehabilitation with the goal of making him more independent following the surgery.

He, understandably, was at a mental low as a result of this life-altering surgery and was also unhappy with his living environment. His vulnerability had marked him out by some of his neighbours and to compound matters, he suffered from a very dry skin condition which left him embarrassed.

We devised a bespoke package of care requiring the visit of two care assistants, four times a day.

We also worked with a social worker to get George accommodation which was better suited to him. This involved a move across town and whilst he was initially apprehensive due to the good relationship he had built with his care team, we introduced him to his new care assistants and supported him with the move, ensuring a safe and smooth transition took place.

Once George moved, we noticed that his mood still was quite low, so we added companionship calls to his care package. This included taking him in his wheelchair to the shops and also to local cafes for lunch. This lifted his spirits immensely, giving him something to look forward to each week.

With the support of an Occupational Therapist and our care staff, George now only needs one care assistant to support him on his four visits per day and he generally now engages more in his care.

The next stage is to work with George to hopefully improve his mobility and introduce more social activities into his life, including introducing him to our monthly coffee club.
