Nothing was going to prevent Mary from returning home

Having lived in the same street for 60 years, nothing was going to prevent Mary Davis from returning home after a spell in hospital. That was made possible thanks to support from Caremark Mansfield & Ashfield.

Mary has knocked her hip out of joint in a fall which severely restricted her mobility but with the help of carers she’s now enjoying being back hom.

“I’m not ready to move into an old people’s home yet,” said Mary.” I prefer my own little place.”

Mary still speaks with a northern accent, a legacy of her early life before she moved south with husband Ian to find work in local mines after the Durham coalfield closed.

Our Care Assistants visit Mary four times a day

When Ian died from a brain tumour aged just 44, she was left to raise their daughter, Linda, who has now emigrated to Australia but calls home regularly and Mary has a grandson and niece who live locally.

As part of the care plan drawn up to help Mary stay our Care Assistants visit four times day. They help her get up, washed and dressed each morning and then call in to help with care and household tasks before getting her ready for bed.

“It’s nice to have them pop in to check how I am and have a chat, “said Mary.

“They’ll do anything I ask really, if there’s some washing in the machine they’ll get it out for me and pop it in the dryer or fold it up.”

Mary attends our monthly Coffee Club initiative

Mary has always been active and was riding a mobility scooter up until the age of 92.

Now she’s still able to get out once a month thanks to our Coffee Club at a local centre and providing transport.

“On the way there I love to wind the window down and feel the air on my face,” said Mary.

“I enjoy meeting up with people and there’s usually a game of bingo and some entertainment.”
