The experience of helping to care for his grandmother during her final years inspired Shaeik Uddin to work in home care.

And his work with Caremark Leeds funds his way through a counselling degree with Leeds Beckett University.

“I have found this job a humbling experience. It really opens your eyes to a world of vulnerable people that many do to realise exists,” said Shaeik. “Often you may be the only person they see all day.”

When Shaeik’s grandmother moved into palliative care he witnessed first-hand the importance of support workers.

“I saw how they looked after her. Now I want to provide the best possible care for people as a tribute to my grandmother.”  

Shaeik, 23, hopes to complete his degree in counselling this year and then move on to a masters degree. He’s also using his work with Caremark to gain National Vocational Qualifications.

“Caremark is a good company to work for because of the flexibility around different lifestyles. I work 30-40 hours a week around my lectures and can also pick up extra hours.”

He added: “I find my degree course is helping me with my work for Caremark, I’m learning about companionship and the importance of it. I’m not sure what I will do in the future though I feel it will be in the care sector. Right now I’m looking to get as many qualifications and as much experience as possible.”

Shaeik worked previously in hospitality and retail before joining Caremark. He has advice for anyone else thinking of switching jobs.

“If you want to make a positive difference to lives then this is the career to be in. It can be emotionally challenging, especially the end-of-life aspect, but if you can cope with that it is very fulfilling.”
