At close quarters

Observing at close quarters the dedication shown by medics during the Covid pandemic inspired Navjot Kaur to become a care worker.
Raised in India, after leaving school Navjot studied engineering at university and gained an MBA in engineering. She had been working in the electronics industry until lockdown brought things to a halt.
“My sister and brother-in-law are both doctors and seeing their dedication inspired me to become a healthcare volunteer during the pandemic,” said Navjot.
“I realised that helping vulnerable people was something I wanted to do and so after Covid I switched careers to the care sector.”
Navjot moved to the UK last year to broaden her knowledge and gain some international experience of the care sector. She secured a job with Caremark Leeds Bradford and has settled in well, recently being named carer of the month.
“Caremark offered plenty of support, training and encouragement,” said Navjot.
“I am a caring person by nature and it’s a great source of satisfaction to be able to help people to make a positive change to their lives.”
Navjot, 34, is part of the home support team who enable people to remain living in their own homes through daily visits, checking they are ok and helping them with a range of tasks.
“I believe the key is to encourage people both mentally and physically to do as much as they can safely manage,” said Navjot.
“To be a carer you need to be a good listener, a good communicator, have empathy and patience.”
To relax Navjot enjoys cooking and yoga and peaceful walks in a nearby park.
“I really enjoy my job and I’m always eager to learn,” said Navjot. “In the future I’d like to gain more qualifications in the care sector and advance my career with Caremark.
