Empathy and dedication needed to support people in their own homes

Supporting her mother through her illness before her early death from cancer gave Layla Pearson a deep understanding of compassion, patience and resilience. That experience inspired Layla to pursue a career in care, believing she had the empathy and dedication needed to truly support others.

Now part of the Caremark Mansfield & Ashfield team, Layla arrives at work each day determined to give her customers the same kindness and respect she gave her mum, Kelly.

“People who are sick or old deserve the very best care in their own home,” says Layla.

“I always try to treat my customers as I treated my own mum. Some don’t have family, so we’re often the main people they talk to or turn to for support.”

After studying hairdressing at college, Layla found it difficult to secure work and decided to follow a different path – one that felt meaningful and natural given her personal experience. She previously worked for another care provider, but as a non-driver, travel costs quickly became a challenge.

Caremark have been brilliant

“Caremark have been brilliant,” Layla explains.

“Most of my customers are within walking distance and if I’m working as part of a double team, I’m paired with a driver who can pick me up.”

A typical day sees Layla visiting customers in their homes, helping them with personal care such as washing, dressing and preparing meals, as well as ensuring they are comfortable and ready for the day.

The difference you make to peoples’ lives

She has also developed practical skills, including the safe use of hoists and specialist equipment to support customers’ independence and comfort.

Looking ahead, Layla hopes to continue building her career by studying for care qualifications while working with Caremark.

“It’s such a rewarding job,” she says.

“You can really see the difference you make when a customer smiles as you walk through the door. My friends think it’s great that I’m in a role where I get to help people every day.”
