How to help someone with personal hygiene care and bathing.

For most people, washing or bathing themselves is a very private activity. So it’s vital that we are sensitive to the fact that we are invading that privacy and that we respect their dignity.
To do this and to make the bathing experience a safe one, we need to make things as pleasant as possible. It must be an enjoyable experience rather than a necessity, otherwise we just create stress and risk physical injuries.
So how do we make bathing more pleasant?
1) Well, we can use nice smelling shampoos or bubble baths. Try playing music and if the person is confused, we can explain what is happing and provide reassurance.
2) We can make sure the room is a comfortable temperature and that the water is also a good temperature. Remember, older people feel the cold more than us.
3) Always keep an eye out for hazards, water on the floor and other areas will be slippery.
4) Remember, not all of us want to be bathed or showered. So, if this is the case with the person you care for, rather than forcing this, you could try suggesting fun activities which are normally followed by a shower, such as swimming for example.
5) Also remember that some people may be anxious about deep water, so using seats in the shower or bath may reduce anxiety. On the other hand, an overhead shower may also be frightening, so you may want to consider using a handheld one instead.
6) It’s always important to involve the person in bathing decisions, ask them how they want to be bathed, what they like and encourage as much independence as possible.
7) At bath time, ensure you bring everything you need, including clothing into the bathroom. You don’t want to risk physical injury or distress if you leave someone alone. Hot water and slippery surfaces are very dangerous.
8) Lastly, remember to look after yourself. If something happens to you, both of you could be in danger.
