Memory Through Music in Glasgow: A Dementia‑Aware Wellbeing Programme Created in Loving Memory of Milly
Caremark Glasgow West is proud to introduce Memory Through Music, a new dementia‑aware wellbeing initiative created in loving memory of our Managing Director Neil’s mum, Milly. Her warmth, humour and lifelong love of music inspired a programme designed to bring comfort, familiarity and joy to people living with dementia at Leverndale Hospital and the Rainbow Friendship Centre.
This project is deeply personal. It reflects Milly’s legacy and our belief that care is not only about supporting people at home — it is also about enriching lives, sparking memories and creating moments of calm for those who need it most.
Why Music Matters for Dementia Care
Music has a remarkable ability to reach people when words no longer can. For individuals living with dementia, familiar songs can:
- reduce anxiety
- ease distress
- stimulate memory recall
- encourage communication
- lift mood
- create shared moments of connection
These benefits are well‑established, and we see them first‑hand in our work across Glasgow West. Memory Through Music allows us to deliver these moments intentionally and consistently.
What the Memory Through Music Programme Offers Today
Memory Through Music in Glasgow currently delivers monthly live music sessions for dementia patients at:
- Leverndale Hospital, supporting individuals in a clinical setting where calm, familiarity and reassurance are essential
- Rainbow Friendship Centre, offering music in a warm, community‑based environment that encourages social connection and gentle stimulation
We work with local musicians who understand the sensitivities of dementia care — performers who bring calmness, patience and a reassuring presence to every visit. Caremark staff attend each session to support patients, families and staff teams.
This is a simple idea delivered with care: real music, real connection, real impact.
A Programme Rooted in Legacy and Community
Memory Through Music in Glasgow exists because of Milly — her love of music, her kindness, and the joy she brought to those around her. It is a tribute to her life and a gift to others walking a similar journey.
It also reflects our commitment to the wider community. Both Leverndale Hospital and Rainbow Friendship Centre have been incredibly supportive of this initiative, and we are grateful for their trust, collaboration and openness as the programme grows.
Growing the Programme Over Time
While Memory Through Music begins with monthly sessions, our ambition is much bigger. Over time, Caremark Glasgow West aims to:
- increase the number of sessions
- involve more local musicians
- explore additional dementia‑aware wellbeing activities
- build new community partnerships
- expand the programme across Glasgow West and beyond
This is the foundation of a long‑term wellbeing strategy — one that will evolve, strengthen and reach more people as it grows.
In Milly’s Memory
Every song played, every smile shared, every moment of calm created is part of Milly’s legacy. Her love of music continues to bring comfort and joy — not just to her family, but now to many others across Glasgow.
