Supporting Independent Living for Older People: Caremark Elmbridge Facilitates Key Wellbeing Session

At Caremark Elmbridge, we are proud to play an active role in helping older people live independently, confidently, and with dignity. As part of our commitment to being a Good Provider, we recently supported an 8-week course titled “Independent Living Skills for Older People.” This valuable program was delivered in partnership with Communities and Prevention, aiming to promote independence, physical wellbeing, and access to essential community services.
What Is the Independent Living Skills Course?
This 8-week course is designed to help older adults develop the practical and emotional tools they need to remain independent in their own homes. Each week, participants explore different topics, from mobility and safety at home to social engagement and accessing local resources.
Caremark’s Role: Promoting Physical Wellbeing and Informed Care Choices
Our dedicated Care Manager, Alice Walsh, led a session focused on physical wellbeing and understanding the support available through social care. Alice provided practical guidance and signposting to a variety of helpful resources and services, including:
- Support groups and charities available for older people in the local area
- Local community activities to reduce isolation and promote social engagement
- Benefits and entitlements available under social care support
- An overview of the Care Act, and what it means for individuals and their rights
- What quality home care looks like and how to recognise good providers
- Where to find trusted information, such as the Homecare Association and Homecare.co.uk
Why This Matters
Understanding how to access care and support can be overwhelming. Sessions like these are essential for empowering older people with the knowledge, tools, and confidence they need to make informed decisions. When individuals understand their rights, entitlements, and community connections, they are far more likely to stay independent for longer.
