Supporting a customer with a neurological condition

Sheila Rowe has always been one to speak her mind and she was never going to let something like a neurological condition get in the way of this. Whilst the condition, known as Cerebellar Ataxia, has robbed Sheila of her speech, she is still able to communicate through a voice typing computer which displays and reads out the words she wants to say.
This makes the job of our carers much easier as during the four visits a day to Sheila, it means they can listen and react to anything she may have to say.
Sheila is ably supported by her husband of 53 years, Bill and their daughter Jackie, who visits each day.
Jackie says the computer has become a lifeline for her mum. They are hoping to upgrade to a more advanced model as she now finds it harder to type as a result of her ataxia. This has damaged the part of her brain known as the cerebellum.
The carers are brilliant, says Sheila
Sheila was diagnosed with the condition in her 40s. As it has taken a grip on her, as well as her speech, it has affected her coordination, balance and fine motor skills.
We began supporting Sheila just over a year ago and she says she is happy with the support we provide.
“The carers are all brilliant and I wish we them years ago,” says Sheila.

Caremark are different and I wished we used them sooner
This is echoed by Jackie who says their experience with other homecare companies was not a pleasant one.
“Caremark are different and like mum says, I wish we had used them sooner,” says Jackie.
“We do not get one problem with them. They are always on time, never late, and are always so respectful of mum.”
We provide support for Bill too
Sheila and Bill have lived in their current home for 30 years and are very popular within their local community. When she was younger, Sheila did a range of different jobs and Bill ran his own driving instructing company, as well as skippering his own boat in his spare time, with deep sea fishing his particular speciality.
Bill used to be Sheila’s main carer but started to struggle after he had a heart bypass, so whilst he still does things like the cooking, he has also benefited from having our professional support to help Sheila.
