Janet has lived a life shaped by history, resilience and public service – and now we are returning this selfless service by providing the support which enables her to remain living as independently as possible in her own home.

Born during the war in Birmingham, her earliest years were spent in a city heavily affected by bombing and she also recalls the UK polio epidemic of the late 1940s, a scar on her leg from the vaccination still a vivid memory of that time.

A bright student, Janet proudly became one of the last two people at her grammar school to earn nine O‑Levels, with one family member saying she didn’t realise she was such a “clever clog”.

As she grew older, her life path took her into public service. Janet first worked at Birmingham Airport and later moved south to take a role at Stansted Airport as a Customs Officer.

Janet enjoys the companionship we provide

It was a job filled with variety—and some unforgettable moments. One of the earliest experiences that left a mark on her was witnessing the arrival of Ugandan Asian refugees in the early 1970s, many of them children fleeing the brutality of Idi Amin’s regime.

Janet describes the sight as “heart‑rending” although she did also experience quirky moments in the job, such as when some people thought the bring one thing back rule meant “one for me, one for my mother, one for my sister.”

She continued working as a Customs Officer until the age of 53, taking early retirement when pension changes made it possible – a decision she reflects on positively, grateful for gaining “an extra six years” of life to enjoy.

Now aged 84, she speaks about her past with clarity and a remarkable sense of humour.

Life has brought challenges in recent years. Her husband John now lives in residential care due to declining health and her own health needs mean she receives support from Caremark Chelmsford and Uttlesford at home.

We have supported Janet for two years and our team visit twice a day to assist with aspects of daily living so she can retain her independence. Janet speaks warmly of the companionship she enjoys from her carers, especially as John is no longer at home with her.

“I would not manage without Caremark”

What touches her the most is how respectfully the Caremark staff speak about her.

“They say they love to come and see me which is nice to know,” says Janet.

“I can’t fault the service at all. Everything works for me. They all come in with a smile and brighten my day. I can have a laugh with them and I feel safe knowing they are coming.

“I don’t need to tell them my needs they all know what to do and just check with me.

“For me it’s more about companionship than anything else because with John no longer here, I often don’t see anyone else all day, so it’s nice to have the carers in the house with me.

“I would not manage without them.”
