There may come a time when you feel your loved one is struggling to live alone and live-in care may be the solution for you. Even if they are already receiving home care and support at home, whether this is from family members or care professionals, it may not be sufficient to support them. Perhaps their condition has deteriorated to the extent that they cannot be left unsupervised throughout the day. They may require a greater level of support. This could be for a number of different reasons, either because of their physical health or mental capacity.

At this point, most people would consider putting their loved one into a care home, but there are other options such as live-in care which have considerable benefits. With increasing pressure on nursing homes, local authorities and other agencies are now turning to live-in care as an alternative.

What is live-in care?

Live-in care services are where a care assistant will live with your loved one in their home. They deliver full-time dedicated care to your loved one and are on hand throughout the day. They support with anything that the individual requires, including personal care, medication, meal preparation and companionship.

The nature of care varies considerably depending on the individual and their medical conditions. For example, some customers may be mobile and others may have very limited mobility.

On average the carer will work an 8-hour day, with a 2-hour break, where another carer will come and relieve them. The carer will structure the time to best support the customer. The carer may be woken a couple of times in the night, although if the customer needs more attention this is something that would need to be put in place separately.

What are the benefits?

For many people, live-in care is an excellent alternative to a residential care home. It enables your loved one to remain at home, in their familiar environment, where they can continue to enjoy their lifestyle and thrive. The support provided is tailored to the individual to ensure they get what they need it.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Enjoyment of home and garden
  • Avoid selling their home
  • Freedom to eat what you like and when
  • No restrictions on friends or family coming to visit
  • Continue pursuing your hobbies and interests
  • Stay with your pets for as long as possible
  • Dedicated care and support from a full-time carer rather than less focused attention in a care home
  • Access to the community when they like

Feedback from a Caremark customer

Customer completes puzzle whilst at home with live-in carer

One of our customers said he never wanted to go to a care home and leave his home. This individual has been a Caremark client in Gravesham for the past 2 years, receiving our home care services, however when his condition deteriorated, his family made the decision to keep him at home.

Our customer is thriving in his home environment and getting on very well with the live-in carer. He is getting out and going for short walks and keeping his mind engaged with activities like puzzles. His family are extremely happy that he is so happy and that they have been able to honour his wishes to remain at home.
