Caremark Has Joined Up With The Silver Line
Caremark has joined up with The Silver Line, the only national, free and confidential helpline for older people. A charity set up by Dame Esther Rantzen
Caremark Mid Sussex and Crawley has joined up with The Silver Line, a charity set up by Dame Esther Rantzen. The Silver Line is the only national, free and confidential helpline for older people open every single day and night; offering information, advice and friendship.
The Silver Line – Background
Esther Rantzen set up the helpline in 2013 following the response from an article she wrote in a national paper on her own experience of loneliness since the death of her husband. Following a successful pilot, The Silver Line launched nationally in November 2013. Since then, the helpline has received over 1.3 million calls – two-thirds of which are made at evenings and weekends when no other services specifically for older people are open.
In 2016, The Silver Line secured funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, which will help to ensure that they can continue to answer every call. But The Silver Line relies on public donations to keep its vital 24/7 helpline running – if you wish to make a donation, text ALONE to 70555 to donate £5* – the cost of one call to the helpline from a lonely older person.

In 2014 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) announced a partnership with The Silver Line. Andrea Sutcliffe Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care and the Care Quality Commission said: “We believe that working together, we will be able to improve the standards of care for older people that may be falling short of the quality they need and deserve. It is also an opportunity to recognise examples of excellence and to highlight best practice to share with others.”
