It was during the Pandemic that Sonia Akther realised she had found her calling in life and thankfully this is now benefiting customers of Caremark Doncaster.

Using her degree and masters in computer science, Sonia began lecturing IT at a college in her native Bangladesh, however it wasn’t the subject but something completely different which made her love the job.

She explains: “I liked the care aspect of looking after the students and then when the Pandemic happened, we needed to do even more of this because one of our jobs during Covid was making sure the students got their vaccines and then if any of them got Covid we had to make sure they isolated and had everything they needed at the time.

“It was a drastic change so that made me think about a career in care and I went to get some more qualifications and ended up working in an eye hospital.”

This eventually led Sonia to return to the UK, where she had undertaken her Masters, and under the international sponsorship programme she began working for Caremark Doncaster in May 2023 – and hasn’t looked back since.

Sonia says: “I have always had a caring nature and whenever someone in my family got sick, they always called me, so I think I was always destined to work in care.

“I love working for Caremark. I get maximum support from my managers, and they are always very flexible, for example if I need to go for a medical appointment.

“When I am providing care for my customers, I am always focused on ensuring they are very happy with the service.

“In a way caring is similar to computer science as it’s all about applying logic and giving it lots of time and attention.

“But caring is much more rewarding!”

Outside of work, Sonia enjoys travelling and meeting new people.
