Free monthly exercise class for local people
Caremark Cheltenham and Gloucester is inviting local people to take part in our free monthly exercise class. This class is also aimed at tackling social exclusion.
We run the seat-based strength and balance class each month at St Philip and St James Church in Leckhampton, Cheltenham.
The sessions are open to everyone and are designed to offer gentle, supported movement. Additionally, there is a welcoming social space with coffee, cake and conversation following each session.
We set up the class as a way of encouraging people to take up gentle exercise in a social setting. This could be particularly beneficial to those with mobility problems who would otherwise struggle to exercise on their own. But the social aspect of the session can also help those who may live alone. Especially those without any family and friend support networks.
A fantastic way to support mobility, circulation and confidence
The sessions are delivered by Joanne Folkes, Caremark Cheltenham and Gloucester’s Registered Care Manager, who is also a qualified Physiotherapist.
She said: “Chair-based exercise is a fantastic way to support mobility, circulation and confidence, especially for people who find other types of exercise difficult.
“Regular exercise like this can also help those recovering from injury and have been proven to prevent falls. Furthermore, it can alleviate joint pain, reduce arthritis progression and improve cardiovascular health.
“We keep it gentle and enjoyable and the social side afterwards is just as important because we know there are many people in our communities who live alone and would benefit from this regular interaction.”
The classes are open to anyone with no booking required
The class runs from 11am to 1pm, with the exercises starting shortly after 11am and lasting around 25 minutes. This is then followed by a relaxed coffee morning. The Church is situated at 60 Grafton Road, Cheltenham, GL50 2DD and there is no need to book in advance.
The next session will take place on Thursday 15th May, followed by Thursday 19th June, Thursday 17th July, Thursday 18th September, Thursday 16th October, Thursday 20th November and Thursday 11th December.
