A passion for the job

“You must have a passion for the job, a heart that wants to help others” That’s just one of the many things why Ronie Gwanzura loves working as a Care Assistant at Caremark Chelmsford & Uttlesford.

Ronie joined us 18 months after moving to the UK from Zimbabwe where he worked as an engineer.

A recession in his home country led to him reevaluating his career options. He also had many years’ experience of helping to care for older relatives in Zimbabwe. Therefore, he decided to become a professional carer.

“I am a family man and so felt a responsibility to provide for my family,” said Ronie.

“I had to seek out new opportunities and health care was something I was interested in.”

Making a real difference to the people we support

Ronie is thriving in the role and making a real difference to the people we support.

“The training was good and there is support available if ever you need it,” he says.

“I like a role in which you need to overcome different challenges, the fact that each day is different and you are helping people.”

One such challenge involved a man living with his blind wife who the Caremark team visited each day.

“He was becoming increasingly frail and we realised it wasn’t due to failing health but his diet,” said Ronie.

The team spent additional time focussing on the man’s diet, finding food that he liked and was able to eat.

“He had hardly been eating anything and having just a beaker of juice a day. Gradually we managed to coax him to eat a little more and found he liked creamy porridge, yoghurt and corned beef hash and so built this into his diet,” said Ronie.

“At first we feared we might lose him, but he has now put on seven kilos and is much better.”

It is solving challenges like this that Ronie enjoys most about the job.

“It brings a great sense of fulfilment to know your effort is not in vain and that you have made a difference to someone’s life,” he adds.
