Practical support
Caremark help isn’t just limited to the elderly or vulnerable adults – we also provide practical support for parents of children with severe autism, learning difficulties, disability or other conditions.
Sarah Swayne got in touch after her family support worker suggested Caremark Bradford could help with her then 13-year-old daughter Katie.
All children start to push boundaries and seek independence as they become teenagers and for children like Katie, who loves being active, this can have added danger.
“Katie has autism, severe learning difficulties and limited verbal communication skills,” said Sarah. “She is an outdoors person and doesn’t always appreciate danger and so requires constant safeguarding. When it was just me this was becoming extremely tiring.”
Caremark Bradford now provide a carer for eight hours a week who understands Katie’s condition as well as her need to enjoy enriching activities. Whilst they take Katie out trampolining, swimming or exploring, Sarah is able to complete household tasks or simply enjoy some respite.
For things to work it was vital that Caremark were trusted by both Katie and her mum.
“At first Katie was wary and wouldn’t go out with the carer unless I was there,” said Sarah. “But they were patient and kind and gradually Katie became confident and trusting of them and I was able to stay at home. Now she can’t wait for them to call round for her.”
When a carer is out with Katie they are always sure to keep mum updated by text to let her know things are going fine or if there is any problem. They also help Sarah research new places she can go to with Katie.
“It’s such a help to have some time to myself whilst knowing Katie is being well looked after and it’s good for Katie to get to know new people,” said Sarah. “For anyone else in a similar situation I’d say give Caremark Bradford a call and see if they can help you.”
