Later in life

Star Sykes had always wanted to work in the care sector but it wasn’t until later in life that she had the opportunity.

Now, one year on since joining Caremark Wakefield, she has no regrets.

“At school I always wanted to work in nursing or care but when I was 18, I had my first child, Mackenzie, and a baby has to take priority,” she said.

“Then later when looked at applying it seemed I never had the right qualifications or experience.”

Star, 27, held down various bar jobs and other part time roles as she raised Mackenzie and her second son Elliott, then spotted an advert for a vacancy in Caremark’s home care support team.

“I applied, they gave me a chance and I love it,” said Star. “I can honestly say I don’t do it for the money, I do it because I find it so rewarding to be able to help people.”  

Outside of work Star captains a women’s rugby team and feels the skills she has learned there have helped her become a better carer.

“Rugby is like a family, being captain I have had experience in leading and in challenging myself to help others in the team,” said Star. “It has given me more confidence, and this has helped in my professional life.”

An example is one of her Caremark customers, a 19-year-old with learning difficulties.

“I took him to the gym, and we devised a proper workout routine for him. He really enjoys it and is thrilled to see his progress,” said Star. “Getting to know a client and the little things that can mean so much to them is very important.”

At the other end of the care spectrum Star’s support also enables clients in their 90s to stay in their own homes.

“For those who have mobility issues and cannot get out we might be the only person they see that day,” she said. “After I’ve finished what needs to be done, I’ll sit down over a cup of tea with them, listen and have a really good conversation.  For many clients that’s the most important thing, to know there is someone who cares about them, who they can talk to.”

When she’s not working, Star, her partner Andy and the two boys enjoy exploring the nearby Derbyshire Dales and hope to try wild camping this summer.

Her advice to anyone who, like her, perhaps thought the chance to work in the care sector had gone is to never give up.

“I would say don’t doubt yourself, go for it,” said Star. “Every day is different, and the most important thing is to want to help people”
