At last- lets Spring forward this Weekend!

The evenings are getting lighter and the days longer, so summer must be on its way.

After a long, cold winter spent mainly in lockdown, many Brits are looking forward to a time when they can spend their evenings enjoying the sunshine and socialising in pub gardens with friends.
Marking the official beginning of British Summer Time (BST) the clocks will go forward this Sunday in the early hours of the morning.
The clocks will go forward one hour at 1am on Sunday 28 March - so the time will jump to 2am.
This means we will unfortunately lose an hour of sleep on Sunday - but ultimately gain much-needed lighter evenings and longer days.

Reece's Muddy Football In The Park

The lockdown restrictions haven’t stopped our compassionate, supportive male carers from giving their young client, Reece, a fun day out in the park to remember.

Reece is eleven years old and has complex care needs. He is autistic and diagnosed with learning development delay. Reece was able to do normal stuff, run around, relax, laugh and smile as he played football in the mud with his carers in the park, at the end of October.

Reece’s mum said “Reece was over the moon and this had been a really good week with his young male support workers. In fact, his mum said, ”this was the best week because of this activity.”

Our carers facilitated this socially distant fun, muddy football in the park which mattered so much to Reece. This was possible because of the compassionate male carers going the extra mile to make help their clients be the best versions of themselves.

We’d say football and mud in the park was just the tonic everyone needed.

The session was chaired by our Director, Mark, who said ‘we recognize good communication is essential to our service- I was really pleased with the teams positive feedback and strength of feeling- they were very complimentary and noted the improvements they have seen.’

What an amazing group of Care Workers- Caring, Responsive and Pro-active

When people talk about going the extra mile it sometimes feels like just a bunch of words. Laura, our Case Leader wanted to recognise two of her team, Ellen and Grace, who truly made a difference to their client and went once again over and above the call of duty.

The background to this story is that our client, who we support most nights, lives with her husband who was hospitalised with a suspected heart attack. As well as being a very serious and traumatic situation it was further concerning as it meant our client had no-one to support them at all and that they would be left alone.

It was our night staff who alerted the emergency services for the husband and who stayed with him until they arrived, the staff had contacted their Case Leader Laura who made sure emergency provisions were in place to support the lady through the period while her husband was in hospital.

Caremark Rotherham COVID-19 Update

We’d like to ensure we keep our clients, team and professionals up to date with how we’re operating at Caremark Rotherham in light of the COVID-19 virus.

We have changed the way we operate our office- there is only one of our team physically in the office each day- the rest of our team are working from home and taking it in turn to come in.

Our management team have been contacting our staff and clients each week to ensure we keep them up to date with our service and stay connected and well communicated at this unique time.

Our amazing Case Leaders, Kirsty & Laura continue to visit and support their staff and clients although we’re minimising contact- they will only physically meet one client each day to reduce the risk of infection spread. Hannah, our fabulous Clinical Lead, is continuing to assess our staff competencies and meet clients to review their medication and clinical aspect of their care- she is also minimising her contact and only meeting one person each day.

While we have had a number of staff and clients who have had to self-isolate, we’ve been incredibly busy supporting our clients and keeping them safe in their own homes.

We continue to be humbled and inspired by the incredible efforts that our staff go to meet the needs of their clients and keep them safe and well and in good spirits- once more we express our heartfelt gratitude to the team for the work they are doing at this challenging time.

It’s really incredible the way that the whole team have really pulled together through this awful situation- special people doing amazing things!

The nation recognises more than ever the vital work that our Care Assistants undertake- did you hear the applause on Thursday evening? That applause was for you- our amazing staff who make that difference to real people- Thank You.

Although our work is not finished and we face some more challenging times in the coming days and weeks we are certain our team will undertake all that is asked of us- with kindness and compassion and care.

Are You Looking for a Fulfilling New Job? We Need You!

If your employment has been affected by the COVID-19 virus either temporarily or permanently and you are looking for work, please contact us on 01709 789340.

We are still recruiting and in this current climate we need care staff in the sector more than ever.

Our Recruitment Officer or any of our team would be very pleased to talk to you to explain in detail the role and how we operate.

All our staff are really well trained, the training we deliver is very practical and our teams really enjoy it and learn from it. Our staff are well supported in their role by their Supervisor’s (we call the role ‘Case Leader’s’).

Our staff are then permanently assigned to their client, we support Children & Young people who have complex health conditions. Typically our staff work an average of 8 hour days or 10 hour nights shifts with their client, however we deliver the support to meet our clients’ needs so these shift patterns are not the only shift patterns we work.

We always aim to match our staff to our clients and take into consideration the geography as we really don’t want our team’s travelling long distances to their client’s homes.

Now, more than ever, we have to protect and support the vulnerable in our society.

Join our team and make a difference.

Advice on Coronavirus- Wash Your Hands

We have been working hard to keep our staff informed and up to date with the latest advice on the Coronavirus direct from Public Health England.

As you may be aware there is currently no vaccine to prevent the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus.

Signs and symptoms
The following symptoms may develop in the 14 days after exposure to someone who has COVID-19 infection:
• cough
• difficulty in breathing
• fever

Generally, these infections can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

Under most circumstances, the amount of infectious virus on any contaminated surfaces is likely to have decreased significantly by 72 hours.

Preventing the spread of infection
There are general principles anyone can follow to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:

• Washing your hands often - with soap and water, or use alcohol sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol if handwashing facilities are not available - this is particularly important after taking public transport. Guidance is available on hand washing
• Covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throwing the tissue in a bin. See Catch It, Bin It, Kill It
• People who feel unwell should stay at home and should not attend work
• Employees should wash their hands:
o before leaving home
o on arrival at work
o after using the toilet
o after breaks and sporting activities
o before food preparation
o before eating any food, including snacks
o before leaving work
o on arrival at home
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

If staff are worried about their symptoms or those of a family member or colleague, please call NHS 111. They should not go to their GP or other healthcare environment

Let’s Take a Moment to Recognise the Little Things That Make a Big Difference

In a news world full of major change and heartache- we’d like to recognise a member of our team, Scarlet and the difference she made to her client just last week. Her client has been diagnosed with Autism and finds it very difficult to sit still. One morning last week Scarlet sat with her client for over an hour learning how to tie his shoe-laces.

Our client’s Dad was amazed- he called Laura, our Case Leader to mark the occasion- as it’s the first time that he can remember where his young son has ever sat still.

Scarlet has made a huge impact- she’s just completed our Makaton training and been able to share her learning with her client- he’s been asking for her using the Makaton sign for Scarlet.

Laura said, ‘Scarlet’s had an amazing affect- he’s so happy now- every morning he’s laughing and giggling, he’s really enjoying playing with his laces’.

Well done Scarlet- what tremendous patience and understanding you have shown- these examples are the big things we want to shout about!

Winter Weather Preparations

As we fast approach the worst of the Winter conditions, we would like to ensure everyone is prepared for ice, snow and the access issues this brings. Typically the first calls of the day can prove the most difficult as the quiet road networks allows the snow to settle, however as morning schedules start, traffic increases and road conditions improve- also the council gritting services become effective.

Our first priority is to ensure both Client and Staff safety, we believe that proactive planning, on all our parts, will reduce risk- our clients will need our support regardless of the weather conditions.

Flu Immunisation

We are pleased to advise you that NHS England have agreed to include Social Care Workers who work for a Registered Domiciliary Care Provider in this year’s FREE Flu Immunisation programme.
NHS England State:
Improving uptake of healthcare workers, including those in primary care, is also seen as a national priority to reduce the transmission of flu and to maximise protection to others, particularly those most at risk of complications of flu.

Many people with flu show no symptoms, meaning healthcare workers who feel fit and healthy can unwittingly infect vulnerable patients. Getting vaccinated is the best way to stop the spread of influenza and prevent deaths.

Front line health and care workers should be given flu vaccination as soon as vaccine is available so that people are protected when flu begins to circulate. Vaccination should therefore be completed by the end of December before flu circulation usually peaks.
