Joyce hasn’t walked for 3 years due to arthritis in her hips. Two years ago Joyce had a double hip replacement but had totally lost confidence in her ability to walk so continued not to.

With a lot of encouragement from Victor Joyce took her first steps in 3 years last week. She is now walking from her bedroom to her sitting room everyday with Victor walking behind her. She is aiming to be able to cook her husband lunch in the next few months.

Joyce says she couldn’t have done it without Victor's care and encouragement and she couldn’t be more grateful that he has given her the confidence to start walking again.

Why adult social care is a great career for men

It's an interesting phenomenon: there are comparatively few male nurses, male childcare experts and male adult social carers. In fact there's a chronic shortage of men in the social care sector. UK Government statistics reveal 84% of carers in England are women, and just 16% men. The numbers have remained much the same since 2012. But adult care is an incredibly rewarding and satisfying career choice whatever your gender.

Thank you to our Haywards Heath carers at Caremark Mid-Sussex

We've received this email today from a family member of one of our late Haywards Heath customers.

After my mother was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, it became clear that she would need an increasing amount of care and in discussing this with some close friends who were also in need of care, they strongly recommended Caremark in Haywards Heath. Caremark was duly appointed and after a careful assessment of her needs, a daily rota of care was established. Many months later, my mother sadly died and at her funeral in St Wilfrid's Church, my father gave the Eulogy. In the concluding paragraphs he referred to the various care and nursing support she had received which included the following.

"The carers from Caremark were a combination of both British and Romanian ladies and they opened my eyes to the wealth of kindness, companionship and compassion that exists, in the way that they looked after my mother, often in stressful circumstances. She looked forward to their coming in the morning and the evening each day and hearing all the details of their families and work.”

The girls I work with are so friendly and supportive. It is a real team. I respect and admire them so much.

Seeing people's faces 'light up' on Christmas Day makes it 'so worthwhile', says h

Christmas is a time to spend with family, yet for almost one million older people, it can be the loneliest time of the year. Home care workers up and down the country are preparing to sacrifice spending time with their own families this Christmas, to care for those who may otherwise spend it alone.

Christine Melville is one of them. She has been a CAREGiver at Home Instead Senior Care Glasgow North for just over two years and is preparing to spend her third Christmas with the people she cares for, helping them celebrate and providing vital support.

Prior to working for Home Instead Senior Care Glasgow North, Ms Melville worked in a care home after spending years caring for her own mother and father, looking after her family and bringing up her two children.

Christine Melville, CAREGiver at Home Instead Senior Care Glasgow North
Ms Melville currently cares for six people who she visits multiple times a week and will be visiting some of these on Christmas Day and over the Christmas period.

Why did you decide to be a home care worker

I used to work in a care home and I was looking for something different. After spending years caring for my children and my own parents, and then a change in my personal circumstances, being a CAREGiver was just what I was looking for.

Why do you choose to work over the Christmas period

I don’t mind working at Christmas because it lets people with young children spend Christmas with their families. Often when visiting people in their own homes, especially at Christmas, their face lights up when they see you and they can have a good moan or a chat and I can spend more time with them. It makes you feel as though you’ve really achieved something with your day by spending it with someone who might otherwise be alone.

It’s a real pleasure to work on Christmas Day and help my clients celebrate if they want to. For some of them, if I don’t visit, they might not see anyone all day, so it really does make a big difference to them.

What does your job mainly involve

Usually I go into people’s homes and help them to get up, get washed and dressed and get their breakfast, though I’ve got some where I go in and tidy up for them and have a chat with them.

How long have you been visiting your regular home care clients for

A lady called Helen is one of my main clients and I’ve been visiting her since I started this role and am looking forward to seeing her over Christmas this year. Helen is 99 years old and she’s so independent and is always trying to do things herself before she asks for help. I love the woman to pieces, she is an amazing woman and ‘a bit of a character’ and it would be great if everyone was like her, she’s a very special lady.

Helen lives on her own and doesn’t have any family so she relies on my visits. Although she does have a close friend, Jean, who is in her seventies who lives close by, but on a cold day she’ll say to Jean, don’t come out today it’s too cold.

It’s her 100th birthday in January and I’m hoping to do something special for her to help her celebrate.

Helen and Christine
Is Helen able to get out and about when you’re not visiting her

She’s able to make herself something to eat, though it’s not an easy job as she has arthritis in her hands. Despite that she’s happy living at home and prefers that to the idea of living in a care home as she likes her independence.

Do many of your clients receive other visitors over the festive season apart from you

A lot of my clients have got families, however, a lot of their families have moved away down South, so often I'm the only person they will see.

If you weren’t working over Christmas what would you be doing

I’d probably be spending it at home. I’ve got family that live near by, but it’s too far to walk as I don’t drive. I prefer working as I can spend it helping other people who might otherwise spend Christmas alone.

Do you prefer being a home care worker, rather than working in a care home

Yes I do because you get to know the clients better and you get to know their families as well more than you do working in a care home. You also get to spend more time with each clients as I only have a few regular clients. Because you know you’ve got at least an hour to spend with them, you can use that time to actually talk to them. It can be quite challenging when you visit someone new, but once you’ve visited a client a few times, you get used to them, their home and their needs so you can get into a routine when you visit them and know what needs to be done.

What is the best thing about being a home care worker

I love everything about my job, sometimes it’s not very nice walking about in the bad weather, but that’s part and parcel of the job. Seeing people’s faces light up when you walk into the house makes the job so worthwhile, especially on Christmas Day. Many of my clients might have a limited time left now, so it’s our job to help them make that time happy and worthwhile.

Women with dementia receive less medical attention than men, reveals study

Women with dementia have fewer visits to the GP, receive less health monitoring and take more potentially harmful medication than men with dementia, according to new research by University College London (UCL).

The study, published in the journal Age and Ageing, also found that only half of all dementia patients had a documented annual review even though GP surgeries are offered financial incentives to carry these out, and women were found to be at particular risk of staying on antipsychotic or sedative medication for longer.

Dr Claudia Cooper, lead researcher at UCL Psychiatry, said: “As women tend to live longer than men, they are more likely to live alone without a family carer to help them access healthcare. Perhaps because of this, they are more at risk of missing out on medical help that might help them stay well for longer.

“We found that women were more likely to be on psychotropic drugs – sedatives or anti-psychotics –which can be harmful in the long term and may not be appropriate. Women tended to stay on such drugs for longer, perhaps because they have fewer check-ups to see if the drugs were still needed.

“Women with dementia who live on their own may need additional support accessing healthcare services. We should ensure GPs have the resources to proactively engage with these patients and review their condition regularly to make sure their treatment plan, including any drugs, are appropriate.”

The researchers analysed the records of 68,000 dementia patients and 259,000 people without dementia to compare their access to healthcare services, using The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database. Overall, people with dementia received less medical care than those without, even though they are more vulnerable to physical and mental illnesses.

“Dementia can cause a wide range of physical complications, including difficulties swallowing and mobility problems,” added Dr Cooper. “People with dementia are particularly susceptible to malnutrition, as they may have difficulties eating, preparing food or remembering to eat.

“Previous research has shown that up to 45 per cent of dementia patients experience clinically significant weight loss, which can lead to further physical problems and frailty. However, despite this high risk, less than half of dementia patients are currently receiving an annual weight check-up.”

George McNamara, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “This research adds to the many concerns surrounding a condition which is already the most feared among people over 55. In addition to facing an illness without a known cure, people with dementia should not be expected to face inequalities in accessing the few health services that are available.

“Everyone with dementia should have an annual review, but this research raises some grave concerns that women, who are disproportionately affected by the condition, aren’t getting the support they need. What is particularly worrying is that medication isn’t been reviewed regularly, which could lead to the prolonged and unnecessary use of antipsychotics.

“'What is clear is that people with dementia need support to help them access the various health and care services they are entitled to. For many people this will be in the form of a family carer, however many are left by Government to rely on charities or threadbare social care services. We need to see an end to the increasingly impossible environment in which these services operate as a matter of urgency.”

Five-a-day fruit and vegetable advice 'unrealistic', says new GPs head

When it comes to fruit and vegetables, two-a-day, rather than five, might be more realistic advice to give families, says one of the UK's leading doctors.
The new chair of the Royal College of GPs, Dr Helen Stokes-Lampard, says lots of people may struggle to afford the recommended amount of daily portions.
Public Health England insists five-a-day is affordable and achievable.
Dr Stokes-Lampard wants doctors to take a pragmatic approach and offer patients tailored goals.
She also rejects the idea that smokers should always be told to give up.
Dr Stokes-Lampard claims many children are being brought up with a culture of not having any fresh fruit and vegetables at all.
And she told BBC Breakfast News: "In the consultation with patients it's vital that GPs sometimes need to tailor the advice to the family in front of them. That may be starting with one or two portions a day and building up to the five portions a day."
However, she added: "The five-a-day initiative is fantastic and gets my and the profession's 100% support. It is what we should aspire to and in fact, probably, people should be eating more than five portions a day ideally."
Are you getting five-a-day?
What counts?
On smoking, Dr Stokes-Lampard said: "The guidance that smoking should be completely given up is clear and unequivocal.
"However, if I have a patient in front of me who has smoked 40 a day forever, who really likes smoking and has no desire to give up whatsoever, then what we might be trying to achieve between us is saying 'what about cutting down'.
"Patients are individuals. You can't treat everyone the same. If you do, patients can zone out and just completely disregard any advice. And nobody gains from that."
Dr Alison Tedstone, of Public Health England, said: "Five fruit and veg a day is an affordable and achievable target and the cornerstone of a healthy balanced diet."
Five-a-day
Almost all fruit and vegetables count towards your five-a-day
Fruit and vegetables do not have to be fresh, frozen is good too
A portion for an adult is 80g
Beans and pulses only count as one portion, no matter how much you eat
Potatoes, yams and cassava do not count
Sweet potatoes, parsnips, swedes and turnips do count

Another review from Emily our Care & Support Worker in Haywards Heath

I started this job 3 years ago at the age of 19.. some would tell me I was too young for this type of job but I thought I'd give it a go & here I am 3 years later doing a job that I wouldn't change for the world, I have met all types of people & come across so many different situations, some amazing but some very sad, but everyday I get home & know what a difference I make to those I care for.

My motto is 'don't knock it until you've tried it'.
