Respite care is the perfect solution for people needing a short-term break from caring for their loved ones. This may be for a holiday, an emergency where you are needed elsewhere or just because you need to recharge your batteries.

Considering regular, short breaks in your care routine will not only be beneficial to you but also for everyone else involved. You will reap the benefits of a much needed rest, and your loved ones will be well looked after by a trained professional during your absence. On your return, you’ll feel refreshed and recharged.
What happens when an unplanned event crops up, like an emergency or illness meaning you are unable to give the time you normally do to those you care for? Preparing yourself for such an event with the knowledge that Caremark have flexible options to suit you can be a great relief.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is a temporary care arrangement to cover for the absence of someone’s usual carers. This can be pre-arranged, or covering an unexpected situation where someone needs care urgently. Whether it’s a 30-minute visit, or 24-hour live-in care, there are so many options available to suit those in need and those around them.

What do our respite carers do?

Our care assistants go above and beyond to understand your loved one’s needs, taking into account their personality, history, and personal preferences. They work with you to ensure they follow the routines that your loved one is used to and give the same level of care, for the same tasks – and possibly more – than you would be giving if you were at home with them. A detailed care plan tailored completely to their needs will be created prior to starting the respite care.

Our carers can assist as little or as much as you need. Tasks they can help with include:

  • Simple household chores
  • Personal care, including dressing, showering/washing and help with going to the toilet
  • Nursing care, such as continence support or catheter changing
  • Social activities, help with memory impairment, and general companionship, including emotional and practical support
  • Shopping, cooking and meal planning
  • Housekeeping, including cleaning, washing and drying clothes
  • Administering medication
  • Supporting recovery or convalescence following hospital discharge
  • Arranging appointments with healthcare professionals
  • Mobility support, e.g. helping your loved one move around the house
  • Feeding and looking after pets

We’ll take care of everything for you

When we first work with you our care assistant will organise a briefing meeting to discuss in detail the normal care regime you follow for your relative or friend. Our carer can even work alongside you for a day so your loved one can get used to them and so that they can watch how you carry out your duties.

During your respite break we will then visit as scheduled, or stay in your home to provide live-in care as planned. We will regularly feedback to you and adjust our care if appropriate.

Respite care at home provides a gentler solution to temporarily placing your loved one in a care home, where they will be away from their familiar surroundings and possessions, and it may be more difficult for friends or family to visit them.

But don’t worry, we won’t be taking over

Of course our involvement doesn’t mean that we’re taking over your role – it’s just a back-up service that will enable you to have time out to enjoy a well-earned, worry-free break.

Why you might need to take a break

Taking care of a loved one or family member is challenging and emotionally and physically very draining. Knowing that you can take a short break from time to time can be a great incentive to keep you going. Or maybe you’ve got to go away unexpectedly and there’s no one else to take over your care-related duties? Whatever the reason, we’re here to help give you as much of a break as you need. Our kind and highly qualified carers can visit your loved one’s home to take over the caring you do, giving you time out whenever you need it.

How often do you need a break?

You don’t necessarily need to have a long break to feel the benefit. Sometimes short respite breaks at regular intervals work well. An option could be one afternoon or evening every week so that you can unwind and enjoy some ‘me time’. Perhaps you would enjoy a monthly visit to the theatre, or to a health spa for a pampering session? Or maybe you need to attend an appointment, go away in an emergency, or just have a bit of time to catch-up on life admin you’ve not had time to deal with. Whatever your needs are, we are here to take the pressure off. We’re happy to be flexible and take the lead from you, responding to how you’re feeling and how your schedule is
