Elderly couple at christmas

We wanted to talk about some of the enormous challenges that older people face this winter.

Age UK are a remarkable charity who take care of our older loved ones. They do an incredible job. They recently released their winter report and we wanted to share some of their findings. We don’t think you will be surprised about their findings, but we do think you will find this interesting.

Firstly – Over 13 million people in the UK are worried about being able to afford to heat their homes and/or to eat adequately this winter.

91% of the over-50s, that’s 23.4 million people, said they were worried about the cost-of-living increases.

75% of the over-50s, that’s 19.3m people, said they have been turning down their heating and/or reducing the hours they use their heating.

40% of the over-50s, that’s 13.3 million people, said they were worried they wouldn’t be able to heat their home enough this winter.

Nearly 19% of the over-50s, that’s 4.8 million people, said they were worried they would not be able to eat enough this winter.

When it comes to prescriptions, more than 22% of people aged 50-59 are worried about being able to afford their prescriptions.

When asked about Care, more than 13% of the over 50s, that’s 3.3 million people, said they were worried that they cannot afford care support.

Almost a third of over 50s, that’s 8 million people in the UK, said their health had got worse in the last 12 months.

This winter, more than ever we need to be looking out for our older relatives, friends and neighbours.
